Located only 10 minutes from Sydney International Airport, the Mercure hotel at Wolli Creek is a busy hotel for leisure travelers and business people alike. Having recently refurbished other areas of the hotel in the 12 months prior to the bar refresh project, the owners of the hotel identified an opportunity to provide a food and beverage service which is unparalleled in the area while giving guests an opportunity to mingle in their down time.
Working with a concept design by Rothwell Design, The Building Guild developed construction detailing and value for money finishes in partnership with the design team through an iterative sampling and prototyping process. Our approach allowed the design team to engage with the finishes and details in a tangible sense, giving the whole project team a chance to understand the look and feel of the reimagined space before it was built.
Featuring custom banquette seating, herringbone timber floor detail, directional lighting as well as brass and hardwood shelving, every element of the project required meticulous attention to detail to create a high quality and intimate space within a traditionally transient area of the hotel. From a practical construction point of view, the works were delivered in an operating hotel environment which required the The Building Guild to plan works meticulously around hotel operational needs. This meant that noisy works and materials movements were limited to small windows of opportunity during midday hours when guests were away from the hotel. Thus planning the noisy works required The Building Guild team to identify the maximum amount of noisy works possible in these small windows so that the remaining fitout could happen in other time slots without time loss. The completed space is a highly detailed lounge and bar which both the hotel and the The Building Guild team are proud of.
